Labor Day Weekend Events In The Low Country

Labor Day Weekend is fast approaching and here are a couple of events that you might want to participate in.

I am an avid shag dancer and to me there is nothing that gets your blood flowing like hearing the great musical sounds from THE EMBERS. The "shag" is the state dance of South Carolina and on August 29 and 30  The Edisto Beach Music & Shag Fest will begin at the Bay Creek Park located beside the Edisto Marina. Dance to the sounds of The Shem Creek Boogie Band, Steve Craig & The Out Of Towners Band, the East Coast Party Band and of course my friend, Craig Woolard and The Embers.

Arts and Crafts will also be featured throughout this two day event along with various food vendors. Bring a friend, a lawn chair, sit back and enjoy this fantastic musical event.  Remember, NO PETS will be allowed at this event.

Music schedules are as follows: Friday - The Shem Creek Boogie Band - 3-7  pm
                                                                The Embers w/Craig Woolard -  7-11 pm
Saturday - Steve Craig w/Out Of Towners - 2-6  pm
East Coast Party Band               7-11 pm
There will be a non professional Shag Contest starting at 9:00 pm on Saturday night.  Put on your shag shoes or those loafers and dance to the sounds of The Embers performing such hits as - I Love Beach Music, Brenda, Hold Back The Night and of course the ever popular Far Away Places released in 1969 on the MGM label.  See you on the dance floor!

The Lands End Woodland, Inc. of St. Helena Island will celebrate the 9th Annual Lands End Woodland Festival on August 29 and 30.  The festival is a multi-cultural community celebration of the Gullah ancestry and culture of the people of St. Helena Island.  This celebration will be displayed through music, storytelling, historical presentations, local art, crafts and a "taste of Gullah" specialty dishes.

The River Festival has become a favorite event for families wanting to take part in cultural events.  The site for this happening will be on the historic site of the former Riverside Plantation overlooking the intracoastal waterway at 100 Lands End Road.  Enjoy the fish fry, folktales in Gullah by S.C. Folk, youth puppet shows, gospel choirs and African drummers and dancers.
